Does event insurance cover cancellation?

Applies nationally Events & Creative
Direct answer

Only if you bought cancellation coverage — "event insurance" is two different products sold under one name. Event liability covers injuries and property damage and is what venues require; event cancellation reimburses non-refundable deposits when covered causes like vendor bankruptcy, extreme weather, or illness force you to cancel or postpone. A liability-only policy pays nothing for a called-off event.

The confusion behind this question is structural: “event insurance” is one label covering two products with different triggers, different purchase deadlines, and different deductibles. People buy the one their venue demanded and assume they own the other. Then the caterer folds, or a hurricane closes the roads, and the policy they hold turns out to be the wrong one.

Direction of payment is the cleanest way to keep them straight: liability pays other people; cancellation pays you.

What cancellation coverage actually pays for

Cancellation policies reimburse non-refundable deposits and expenses when a listed cause kills or moves the event. Markel’s published causes include vendor bankruptcy, extreme weather, host or honoree illness or injury, and military deployment or withdrawn leave — with optional extensions for things like special attire, lost or stolen gifts, photographs, and vendor no-shows. The pattern across the market: named causes outside your control, not cold feet or a change of plans. (A separate “change of heart” product exists at some insurers for called-off weddings, always with its own conditions — never assume it’s included.)

The weather question

“Will event insurance cover us if the weather forces us to postpone?” is the single most common phrasing of this question, and the answer has three parts:

  1. A liability-only policy pays nothing — wrong product.
  2. A cancellation policy covers extreme weather — hurricanes, tropical storms, severe snowstorms — not an ordinary thunderstorm that thins the crowd.
  3. Timing is underwritten: Markel requires the policy be purchased at least 15 days before the extreme weather is anticipated. You cannot buy weather coverage when the forecast already shows the storm.

How to buy it right

  1. Venue contract in hand → event liability at the limits it demands, with the venue as additional insured. That’s the one-day event insurance question, and it’s about protecting the venue and guests.
  2. Deposits at risk — venue, caterer, band, travel → cancellation coverage, bought early, for roughly the total of your non-refundable spend.
  3. Alcohol at the event → that’s a liability feature (host liquor), not a cancellation feature. If alcohol is being sold, the seller needs liquor liability.
  4. Read the cancellation cause list before relying on it — vendor failure, weather, and illness terms differ between insurers.

Questions hosts actually ask

Will event insurance cover us if weather forces us to postpone or cancel? Only a cancellation policy, only for the severe-weather causes it lists, and only if you bought it before the storm was on the radar — 15 days before, under Markel’s published terms.

Does event insurance cover alcohol? Host liquor liability is an option on the liability policy for hosts serving alcohol. It has nothing to do with cancellation, and selling alcohol requires the seller’s own liquor liability coverage.

Is there a deductible on event insurance? Both products carry them, and they differ: Markel publishes $1,000 on liability property damage and $25 per coverage area on cancellation claims.

When should I purchase event insurance? Liability can be bound as late as the day before the event. Cancellation only works bought early — its whole value is locking coverage before any cause is foreseeable.
