Workers’ compensation

Canonical definition

Workers’ compensation is the state-law system for benefits related to work injuries and illnesses. Whether a business must secure coverage depends on the jurisdiction’s rules, including its employee definition, exclusions, and employer threshold.

Workers’ compensation answers turn on state law and the facts of the work. Florida, for example, publishes different thresholds for non-construction, construction, and agriculture employers. California’s statute defines who is an employee for that system. Use the authority for the state where the work is performed; a broad statement that a business has “no employees” can miss owners, seasonal staff, or a worker who is legally treated as an employee.
