Questions by coverage line
Business Owner's Policy (BOP)
All BOP questions →- Do personal trainers need insurance? It depends on your employment status, not your training location. W-2 trainers generally work under the gym's coverage; independent contractors don't, because gyms require them to carry their own policy and show a certificate of insurance, often naming the gym as additional insured. Garage, park, and online training leave your policy as the only one in the room.
- What insurance do I need for a salon? It depends on which business you are. A salon owner insures the premises and staff with a business owner's policy plus workers' comp and professional liability; a booth renter is, in the IRS's own framing, an independent business that needs its own coverage, because the owner's policy stops at the chair.
- What insurance do I need to open a gym? Plan on general liability plus commercial property for the equipment and buildout (often as a business owner's policy), workers' comp under your state's rules, and a system for collecting certificates from independent trainers. A signed waiver replaces none of it, because a waiver is a defense you argue after you've been sued, not coverage.
